It's Easy Bein' Green: Seminar February 12
With all due respect to Kermit, it can be easy being green. Offshore, you are your own eco-system. With some foresight, planning, and attention to detail, you can minimize the negative effect your ocean crossing can have on the ocean itself.
We invite you to think about a few areas where you can have an impact and, importantly, we invite each boat to designate an "Environmental Steward" who can take the lead in these discussions.
Among the areas for attention:
- Plastics: Never discharge from the boat and seek to minimize your usage overall
- Hydrocarbon discharge: watch out for oil and fuel in the bilge and then overboard
- Power generation: Can you use solar or wind or ...?
Our friends at Sailors for the Sea (see below) will be joining us for a seminar on February 12 at 6 pm PST. A Zoom link will follow. At the seminar, we will also be announcing the details of an environmentally-centered award for boats in the 2024 Pac Cup.
So. Please have each boat designate at least one Environmental Steward and plan on attending the seminar on the 12th!
Sailors for the Sea Powered by Oceana is the world’s leading ocean conservation organization that engages, educates and activates the sailing and boating community toward restoring ocean health. Through our Clean Regattas program, we have supported sustainability initiatives and growth in almost 4,000 events worldwide. We are excited to support the Pacific Cup's sustainability journey through this program and the introduction of the Environmental Steward crew position in the 2024 race. Pioneered by the 2022 Newport Bermuda Race, the Environmental Steward or "eSteward", is a crewmember who is charged with focusing on Green Boating, inspiring the crew, and educating others on the ways to incorporate sustainability in racing.
In this session, Sailors for the Sea Program Manager Emily Conklin will explain the Clean Regattas program and concept of the eSteward position. She will also be joined by SfS Skipper Volunteer and experienced offshore sailor Chris Wolfe, who will lend her expertise on incorporating sustainability into provisioning, racing, and all aspects of boating life. Together, they will give tips and tricks, and answer questions about how to make green boating work for an offshore race
