(San Francisco) With the clock counting down to the May 1 entry deadline, the
15th Biennial Pacific Cup is literally overflowing!!
To date, 72 entries have been received for the 2008 Pacific Cup
race to
Hawaii.
This makes the fleet the second largest in Pacific Cup history,
exceeded only by the record 78 participants in the epic 2000 event. The 2008
Pacific Cup fleet will be dramatically larger than the last several Pacific
Cups, reflecting the resurgence of interest in offshore racing along both the
West Coast and the rest of
North America.
The Pacific Cup continues to be a “friendly competition”
attracting a wide spectrum of boats and sailors. Whether planning to break records, or simply
looking forward to a great adventure, all will enjoy the often “breeze on”
conditions at the start that eventually give way to not-to-be-believed downwind
sailing day after day in the warm trade winds of the Pacific Ocean.
The 2,070 nautical mile race will be handicapped using Pacific
Cup Ratings derived from the VPP-based Offshore Racing Rule (ORR) and Northern
California PHRF ratings.
There is still time to enter this year’s Pacific Cup. Get your entry in now, before the May 1st
deadline arrives!
About the Pacific Cup
Yacht Club and the Storm Trysail Club
The Pacific Cup Yacht Club (PCYC) was
established in 1979 to organize and run the biennial Pacific Cup race from
San Francisco to
Hawaii.
PCYC’s focus is on safety and fun. As such, its pre-race seminars are not only
qualifying events for Pacific Cup participation but a means to introduce and
encourage participation in offshore sailing. Membership is open to those who
have completed a Pacific Cup race or volunteered for the PCYC.
The Storm Trysail Club (STC),
reflecting in its name the sail to which sailors shorten when facing adverse
conditions, is one of the world’s most respected sailing clubs, with its membership
comprised skilled blue water sailors. In addition to holding various
prestigious offshore racing events (among them the
Fort Lauderdaleto Key West Race and
Pineapple Cup Montego Bay Race), STC also has developed the Storm Trysail 65
and the Box Rule that will govern its design. In 2005, STC joined together with
other leading organizations, such as the St. Francis Yacht and the New York
Yacht Clubs, to successfully introduce the IRC rating system in
North America.
