Blue Water Sailing Magazine Joins 2008 Pacific Cup, Sponsoring “Fastest Family” Prize and Bon Voyage Party

SAN FRANCISCO, May 22, 2008 – Blue Water Sailing magazine and Pacific Cup race organizers announced today that the magazine has become an official sponsor of the 2008 Pacific Cup. The race, run biennially from San Francisco to Hawaii, has taken thousands of sailors on adventure of a lifetime.

“This passage takes sailors about as far from land as it is possible to get,” said Blue Water Sailing editor George Day. “The format of the race, with strong education and safety components in the pre-race seminars, makes this a natural for us.”

Blue Water Sailing’s participation includes named sponsorship of the official Bon Voyage party at the San Francisco Yacht Club. The magazine is also sponsoring the Fastest Family Afloat award. The prize goes to the monohull boat, wholly or heavily manned by one family, with the best corrected time.

With several known family efforts in the race, including longtime race participants Jim Quanci and Mary Lovely (and children) aboard their family-run boat Green Buffalo and world champion Paul Cayard and family above recently-acquired Santa Cruz 50 Hula Girl, the competition for the trophy should be one to watch.

“Sailing with your family is a great way to develop and strengthen lifetime bonds,” said Jim Gregory, PCYC Vice-Commodore and entries chair. “It’s great to have a family-run magazine like Blue Water Sailing recognize that with this trophy.”

Pacific Cup Yacht Club (PCYC) was established in 1979 to run the biennial Pacific Cup. PCYC’s mission is to realize the dreams of 70 or more yachts full of sailors, in a competitive, safe, and fun race from San Francisco to Hawaii. As such, its pre-race seminars are not only qualifying events for Pacific Cup participation but a way to introduce and encourage participation in offshore sailing. The Storm Trysail Club (STC), reflecting in its name the sail which must be shortened when facing adverse conditions, is one of the world’s most respected sailing clubs, with its membership comprised strictly of skilled blue water and ocean racing sailors. In addition to holding various prestigious offshore racing events (including the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race, Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex and Block Island Race), STC also hosts the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta and annual junior safety-at-sea seminars. It also has developed, in cooperation with the Transpacific Yacht Club, the Storm Trysail Transpac 65 and the Box Rule that will govern its design.  Additional information is available at www.stormtrysail.org.
