Radio Information

Attention Pacific Cup Racers! While your Board and your Communications Team continue to stress reliance on a well-installed SSB and the knowledge of how to use it, other communications means may be desirable or convenient at times. To help with emergency, backup, and casual communications, it would be nice to know the following information: Will you have a Sat phone on board? Will it normally be on? What is the phone number? Do you have DSC for VHF? For SSB? If so, what is your MMSI? May we share the above information with your fellow racers? If we do, they might call you?

Please send information to communications@pacificcup.org

New Trophies

Latitude 38 Performance Trophy to the boat with the best performance within its division.

Best First Run Trophy to the boat with the best corrected time whose crew has very limited trans-ocean experience.

Best Prepared Trophy to the boat judged to be best prepared by the Nannies and Inspectors.

Million Mile Trophy to the boat with the best corrected time run on the day that one million miles have been sailed by boats in the West Marine Pacific Cup races. The Million Mile Committee has completed its calculation of the official mileage to date for purposes of the Million Mile Trophy. The
official number is 946,758 miles of fun sailed. Each day, the total number of miles of fun will be totted up and an award will be given to the boat with the best performance on the day the millionth mile is sailed.

This should result in the award being snagged around day 7 of the race, when most boats will be in a position to take advantage of favorable breezes.

Oceana Trophy to the boat whose crews demonstrates the most concern for the health of the oceans. The primary selection criteria are "leaving a green wake" and "sharing information" as judged by:

  1. Removing all non-essential materials from provisions and disposing of them properly before leaving the dock.

  1. Recycling at the finish.

  1. Information supplied in the Post-race Questionnaire addressing:

a) What most impressed you with the Pacific?

b) What was the most beautiful thing you saw during the passage?

c) What wildlife did you see?

d) What did you see that should not be in the ocean?

e) What are you doing or planning to do to help the oceans and their inhabitants?

Tracking and Scoring program

A scoring and tracking program will be available for your use soon. A demonstration version that provides positions of the boats is free and will be downloadable from our Web site prior to the Skippers and Navigators meeting. A full version, the "Bodacious" version will be available for

$50. It includes several additional features that include detailed tracking, plotting, and performance figures-of-merit, to allow you to determine how close (or far apart) various competitors are at any given point, on a corrected-time basis. Ordering and other information will be provided later.

We Want Your Photos!

Make your race a part of the celebration! We would like to include any digital photos from your West Marine Pacific Cup experience in our annual awards evening slide show. Simply place the photos on a disk, compact flash card, or thumb drive and present them to the KYC office by 6 PM on Wednesday, July 19. Your media will be returned to the club office for you to collect on July 21. Please clearly label the storage device with your name and address so we can find you or mail it back to you after we have made a copy if you fail to collect it. If you have just a few (no more than 5, please) photos, you may email them to marcyfleming@earthlink.net. In all cases, TIF or JPEG files preferred and of course nothing, R or X-rated or copyright restricted, please.

Shipping

Special reminder to schedule time at Hawaii yards if you are shipping your vessel home. Keehi says they have only 3 racers with reservations.

Skippers, Owners, Racers, Volunteers, All Welcome!

Pacific Cup Yacht Club’s Board of Directors will hold their monthly meeting and a post race debriefing at Kaneohe Yacht Club on Thursday, July 20 at 1:00 PM. Everyone involved with the race is welcome to attend this informal “debriefing session.” The Board is interested in hearing from participants what worked, what didn’t, how you’d make it better and what you’d like to see in 2008. Anyone wishing to volunteer to work on future races may “sign up now” for this exciting opportunity. Also, membership forms will be available for those who would like to join PCYC ($35 for two years) and burgees will be for sale ($35 each).
