By now, many of you have received the 2006 West Marine Pacific Cup Race Guide. It turned out great except for a couple very import omissions that I made. I wrote the Trophies & Fun Prizes section. Somehow, I forgot to mention two very important new awards, the Best Prepared Boat and Best First Passage awards. The winner of the first will be selected by a combination of our Nannies and Inspectors. The Best First Passage will go to the boat with the best corrected time whose crew has very limited trans-ocean experience. These two trophies, except for inscriptions, are the same as the Million Mile trophy that is featured prominently in the Race Guide. These new awards continue the tradition of keeping the West Marine Pacific Cup the FUN race to Hawaii.

Divisions have not been finalized, but there will be five divisions, plus the double-handers, and maybe one multi-hull. All the large boats, Morpheus and larger, will be in one class that will start Thursday. There will be no Friday Start!
Pains Wessex is recalling ALL LOTS of the Pains Wessex White Collision Warning (MK7) Hand Flares. Please return all Pains Wessex White Collision Warning (MK7) Hand Flares to your nearest West Marine or Boat U.S. store for a refund, or credit toward replacement flare(s) manufactured by Orion (SKU 2356053). If you are unable to return flares to a West marine or Boat U.S. store, then contact Pains Wessex directly for further instructions by phone at +44(0)2392 623965 during business hours or email recall@pwss.com.
The “Are You Considering Shipping Your Boat Home?” article on the PCYC Web site under Race Tips has been completely revised. It also addresses shipping cruising equipment, sails, etc. from the West coast to Oahu and back.
Need a Trailer to Ship Your Boat Home?
Need a trailer for a large boat? Jim Eddy has a trailer for a Cal 40 suitable for roll on/roll off. It was built last year and used to bring two boats back from Honolulu. It is adjustable, so it could fit a similar sized boat. The trailer has three axels, six wheels, and can be towed by small truck. It was used to very easily move the two Cal 40s from San Diego to Long Beach. Pasha, Honolulu to San Diego did an excellent job with both boats. They were inside during shipping. There was no wear and tear and no damage. Rent on the trailer is $1,500. It is in Long Beach. If you are interested in renting the trailer, then contact Jim at 818-244 9027.
Alternative for Shipping Delivery and Cruising Gear to Oahu
There is an alternative for shipping cruising equipment, delivery equipment, etc. to Oahu. The cost of a 20 foot container is $4,200. The container would be available for loading for just one day. This is a self service alternative. It would most likely be loaded at the Richmond Yacht Club on July 3, so any boat participating in this shipping alternative and starting on July 3 will need to have friends do the loading for them. The container would be at KYC for 10 days starting, most likely, on July 10. You must unload your own stuff. It cannot be stored at KYC. If six or more people are interested, then this alternative becomes cost effective. If you are interested, then contact Jim Gregory at jim@jdgregory.com.
Free Questionnaire Punch at the Bon Voyage Party! Go Scuba Diving!
Skippers, the more we can learn about your boat and crew the better job we can do in planning awards and FUN activities at KYC. So please download and complete the Pre-Race Questionnaire form. You will find links to download the form in the “Recent Postings” box and on the “Pre Race” page of the PCYC Web site at http://www.pacificcup.org/06/PDF/pc06Pre-Race-questionnaire.pdf. If you do, then you will receive:
1. Free Questionnaire Punch or a non-alcoholic beverage of you choice at the Bon Voyage Party and
2. Be entered in a raffle for a two-dive scuba trip on Oahu if you are a certified diver or introduction to scuba course if you are not certified. All equipment and instruction is included.
Don’t Forget to Plan for the Parties in Hawaii
Be sure to check out the activities available at Kaneohe Yacht Club on the PacCup web site – http://www.pacificcup.org - including:
Along with getting the most fun possible from the race, our support team in Kaneohe could really use your reservations early so they can insure there is enough space and food for everyone!
West Marine Pacific Cup – Online Race Tracking
Does your shore crew want to know where you are more than once a day? Will having that kind of information add to their enjoyment of the race plus provide peace of mind that the boat and crew are safe? Actually we do not yet have confirmation that the data will be downloaded more than once per day. This truly is an experiment!
Horizon Marine has agreed to provide one tracking device per Division on a trial basis. The transponder takes about 20 – 30 minutes to install and will allow anyone with web access to track your boat online in intervals of 2 hours.
If you're interested, contact Jim Gregory at jim@jdgregory.com. If more than one boat wants to participate from a Division, a drawing will be held to determine who gets the transponder. However, others can "rent" a tracker for $350/tracker, with a $1,200 damage deposit.
To view race tracking samples go to http://www.iboattrack.com/.
More Information - Online Race Tracking
As many of you know, this year we are running an experiment with transponder tracking of some of the boats in the West Marine Pacific Cup. Horizon Marine will publish boat transponder relayed positions at varying times for those boats participating in the experiment. That site will also re-publish our official report-in positions for all the people in our race. This may result in some confusion among the stay at home people when they see some boats changing positions on that website and others apparently not moving. For those of you without a transponder, please tell your wife, husband, mother, farther, siblings, significant other, and friends, to follow your progress and competitive position on the official West Marine Pacific Cup website (www.pacificcup.org ).
The official West Marine Pacific Cup Website (www.pacificcup.org) will continue to be the only official source of daily position reports, and will provide a link to Horizon Marine’s website for those interested in this transponder tracking experiment.
Please note that our experiment with transponder based tracking does not imply any future change to our check-in procedures. We intend to keep it (our time honored and approved and effective daily SSB check-in procedure and official publication ) for a number of reasons, including safety, contact explaining problems, general fun (especially “children’s’ hour”), position check-in with a navigator generated position at a certain time for everybody, our ability to score the race with entry into our PCR software, etc. The transponder positions are intended as a supplemental service only.
Finally, Horizon Marine, the company running the transponder site, has asked permission to run the pictures of the boats in the West Marine Pacific Cup. We are willing to allow them to re-publish the pictures you have sent us, if you agree. As most people like to see pictures of their boat on the web, we are assuming that most of you will agree. Thus, if you don’t want us to send them your picture, please tell us by reply email and we will not send it to them.
