Ho Ho Ho from the Quarterdeck

Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau'oli Makahiki Hou from Kaneohe Bay. Looking forward to Christmas 2006, it seems as though the 2008 Pacific Cup is far in the distance. For anyone thinking about doing the race, though, it’s not too early to start planning. At the Pacific Cup YC we have started on several initiatives we feel will really improve the race. Among these are:

  • More seminars covering more topics. We are planning on three seminars during the next 18 months, the first of which will be early in 2007 and intended for sailors who have never done a major ocean passage. Costs, insurance, equipment and crew will be discussed.
  • New sponsors and expanded sponsorship. We will also be adding several new sponsors, in addition to looking forward to working with West Marine, who has been our title sponsor for 20 years.
  • More marketing and publicity to bring in more entrants. We have been slow to realize that we need to bring in new sailors to the race, and we will be looking for at least 60 entrants in the 2008 race. We are also exploring new classes – one designs, or sport boats, or semi-pro, or multihulls, or others – while still being the preeminent race for family sailors in boats from 30 to 50 feet.

Many other ideas are being examined. Less paperwork for one, and removing equipment or inspection requirements that are not really needed, Helping more with delivery back to the mainland after the race is another idea. If anyone has other good ideas please let us know, either by emailing me (there is a link on our web site) or contacting any member of the PCYC board.

As the new Commodore, I am really delighted to have the assistance of Vice Commodore Jim Gregory, who skippered Morpheus to second in division in 2006, and Rear Commodore Michael Moradzedah (known to past racers as theVoice of the Pacific Cup on his boat Cayenne) These two guys are enthusiastic and hardworking and, with the assistance of an outstanding board of directors I look forward to making this an even greater race in 2008. Please join us and come to our meetings, usually at Berkeley YC at 7:30 p.m., usually on the third Monday of the odd numbered months in 2007. The next meeting will be Monday 22 January at 7:30 at BYC.

Post Race Survey

Aloha friends and fellow sailors!

As we prepare to elect next year's PCYC board, and now that we've had a little time to recover from the 2006 race, it's a good time to provide some input to the new board to help them plan for the 2008 Fun Race to Hawaii. In particular, we're looking to hear how we can make the race better, and more attractive, for 2008.

We'd like everyone involven in the 2006 race to complete a short, on-line survey. You can get to it by clicking on this link. Skippers, please also forward to your crew.

In any case, we hope to see and hear from you at our annual meeting, November 13, 2006 at Berkeley YC, at 7:30 p.m. And remember, it's just 600 days till the next start...

Mahalo!

Charlie Roskosz,
your outgoing PCYC Commodore
