Has there been a FINAL decision from a person of authority on the issue of SSB or the option to use a SAT phone instead? I am with other racers, that in today's technology it seems that the use of SSB is becoming obsolete, why not just a SAT phone?? Thanks, look forward to your response.

No SSB for Double Handers

Not sure I am a fan of this decision, but if this is the formal word that DH boats do not need SSB's, then I suggust that every boat the carries a Satphone be required to provided the phone number to the Race Commeitee. With that information I then think the RC should distribute every number to all boats so each boat has the same list of numbers.

It obviously does not force boats to answer Satphone calls, but at least the numbers will be equally suppllied to all racers. Should make life a little easier for all.

Thanks, Ken

Yes

As reflected in the Notice of Race, which in turn reflects the FINAL decision by the Board of Directors, we are requiring carriage of SSB by non-doublehanded boats. We are allowing the doublehanders to instead carry sat-phone.

Regardless of equipment requirements, we are working to develop a fair way to use Sat-phone check-in for all racers who care to do it. There are numerous issues with this, starting with making position information available to all sailors on a fair and timely basis.

Bottom line: non doublehanders carry SSB.

In my day, things weren't so new!
