We were reading the Pacific Cup Manual over the holidays and there is a section on SOLAS Category 1 flares. Seems like everything else is mentioned, except for flares in NOR. Will all racing vessels have a Category 1 flares set on board?

 Thank You,

Inspection Report

Here is a link to the 2008 inspection report form:  pcyc08inspectionreport.doc

I was hoping that it would have been on the Pac Cup 2008 archives (there *is* a lot of good stuff in the archives), but I couldn't find it.

We should get an official confirmation, but the 2010 PacCup NOR references the 2009-2009 OSR (not the 2010 version), so there seems to be no requirement fo AIS, and I suppose that dyneema lifelines are still not allowed (for example).

The equipment list is pretty big.  VALIS carrys both a drogue and a sea anchor, but we're a heavy cruiser and I'm not sure they are required for the Pac Cup.

Do note that the inspection report form does not mention each and every requirement.  For example, your mast base must be secured solidly (probably not an issue for a cat, bit it is for my keel-stepped monohull), and while this is in the OSR, I don't see it on the report form.

Mast step

I looked in further on the mast attachment issue and I got an explanation from another forum I belong to. The mast attachment requirement is for boats with keel stepped mast only the reason being is if the mast goes down, nobody below the deck gets hurt. Requirement does not apply to deck stepped masts.

OSR/Mast step

Thank You for the inspection check list. I just got an email that confirms 2008-2009 OSR as a base for rules - that was just in time! I compared the older and the newer regs and  2010-2011 OSR seems to add some very interesting requirements, but thats for the next race to think about – I think neither should be read in too closely for sanity sake. Thanks for pointing out the mast attachment requirement. Did you bolt through the mast to the deck and to mast locating block? My mast sits on the plate with a fiberglass block attached to it that extrudes into the mast about four inches. Something like this, except starboard wastnt invented yet:

Securing the mast

VALIS has a big welded stainless mast-step fitting tied into the hull and forward keel bolts, with a piece that the mast base drops over.  I have two bolts run horizontally through the mast and this fitting.  I'm not sure how the aluminum / stainless interface is treated -- probably a lot of lanocote or something.  I've seen absolutely no evidence of corrosion.

There is no bolting at the deck partners, just Spartite.

Flares

The NOR contains additions and modifications to the ISAF regulations, so the default is that the ISAF Cat 1 rules apply.  All participants must carry the SOLAS flares, and this has been an inspection item in previous races.

Paul, Admin, thanks for the SOLAS flares clarification. Do you have an inspection check-list from a prior race? I will get a kit from Landfall and call it even. As for ISAF Category 1 regulations as a default, http://www.sailing.org/tools/documents/OSR2010Mo1101209-[8154].pdf .- just glancing over the list - ISO/CE Category A Ocean certificate, AIS, sea anchor, MOB alarm - I cant see all yachts comply to this regulations verbatim, while being seaworthy, not all have certifications and probably not all of the extra equipment stated. I may be wrong, which in this case would be a good thing. That being said, why not include SOLAS flares into NOR? This avoids confusion, if anything.
