The crew of Cinnibar posed a few questions to me.  As I have just returned from meeting with the Kaneohe Crew, I thought I'd share provisional answers:

  1. Can we expect to obtain a slip at Kaneohe or must we expect to anchor out? (our dimensions are LOA=50’, Beam=14.4’, Draft=9.5’)
You cannot _expect_ to obtain a slip if you are over 40 feet.  Many boats end up getting slips, but you should be prepared to anchor out.
  2. Is there an option to reserve/rent a slip?
I don't think so.  I'd be very surprised, but will ask.

  3. If we must anchor out, must we provide our own dinghy or can we count on the ‘KYC water taxi’ service?
I believe that reasonable transport will be provided

  4. What do you recommend?
Sail really fast to Kaneohe, be prepared to anchor out, and be pleasantly surprised if you don't have to.

Define "Anchoring Out"

I'm not sure about a 50-footer, but in most cases "anchoring out" means tying up between the Kaneohe bulkhead and a mooring float, or tying/rafting in the second and third tier of boats and using a stern anchor.  Getting ashore is just a matter of boat-hopping.  Some of the bigger boats do truly anchor our in the bay though, but I don't know if this is by choice or because of limited room among the bulkhead crowd.

If you do end up at the bulkhead, it's a good idea to have fenders and cushions, since things do get tight.

Anchoring Out = Out!

Anchoring out means using an anchor and being in the lagoon immediately in front of the club.  This is real anchoring, and it's genuinely out.  How many boats, if any, will have to do that will depend on the finish count and the size of the finishers.

In my day, things weren't so new!

OK, so I'm now clear on the

OK, so I'm now clear on the definition.  But we do have three groups:  Slip Dwellers, the Bulkhead Crowd, and the Anchor Outs.  Is there a size limit beyond which a boat *has* to anchor out, or does this depend on slip availability and/or the situation at the bulkhead?
