Kent Benedict, MD, FACEP
Dr. Kent Benedict is a Santa Cruz emergency physician and Medical Director for the county’s Emergency Medical Services. He has been organizing and teaching courses on Emergency Medicine at Sea for over 26 years. He was the Chief Medical Officer for the California State University Maritime Academy's training ship, the Golden Bear for 22 years He currently holds two U.S. Coast Guard licenses, one as a Ship's Surgeon, the other as Ship's Master (100 tons). As a professional sailor he spends his summers working as a charter captain in the West Indies from the Grenadines to the British Virgin islands.
He is the author of the section on Medical Emergencies at Sea in the textbooks The Merchant Marine Officer's Handbook and the American Merchant Seaman's Manual. He has also authored multiple chapters in the 2008 edition of the World Health Association (WHO) textbook, The International Medical Guide for Ships. He has lectured nationally for West Marine, Safety-at-Sea seminars and also contributes articles to Latitude 38.
