OFFICIAL 1998
COMMUNICATIONS VESSEL

TA MANA

[Editor's note: Without the dedicated volunteers aboard the communications vessel, we could well be in the dark about the progress of the race. Fortunately, a crew of truly stalwart volunteers will be at sea with the racers to relay position reports and other news to those of us who will remain shoreside. These folks deserve a lot of credit and gratitude for the job they will be doing.]

The Captain of Ta Mana is Bernard Quante. This is his 4th Pac Cup. His ridiculous rating, challenged in the past to no avail, prompted him to take a more leisurely approach to this race.

Patricia Dallas (voice of the Pacific - ye Gods!) who speaks with a kiwi accent (don't complain - it could be worse as there are 2 Germans on board), is a Ham on her first off shore venture prior to leaving for a long term cruising life in September.

David Sapiane (pronounced say-pee-en) is a veteran of 3 pacific Cups (in fact a navigtion award winner in 1992). His voice will be heard when Patricia is using the side rail or bucket!

Also helping with computer recording and transmission will be Cindy Norman and Richard Leevey. Cindy is a local here in San Rafael and is on her first ocean adventure. Richard has been racing a J29 on the Bay for 8 years and is currently fleet captain. Of more importance to the crew of TaMana are his cuilinary skills wich will be playing a big role in our joie de vivre.

The 6th member is Werner Kretschmer, a first engineer so a very useful addition to the comm team. He also is on his first Pac Cup.

The Ta Mana radio license no. is WBJ5365.

We will be reporting Ta Mana's position as if she was part of the race - otherwise our crew may slack off a tad!
