SLEEPING DRAGON TAKES FLEET LEAD IN PACIFIC CUP, SAN FRANCISCO- KANEOHE YACHT RACE AS MANY YACHTS PASS HALFWAY POINT

Ray Sweeney, Sweeney Communications, (808) 533-0033 Sweeneycom@aol.com

Kaneohe -- Hobie-33, Sleeping Dragon has taken the overall fleet lead in Day # 8 of the biennial Pacific Cup Yacht Race from San Francisco to Kaneohe Bay. Skipper Dean Daniels and crew will be halfway to Kaneohe sometime this morning.

Others who are already halfway to Kaneohe include Raindrop the double handed entry that also has the DH Division 1 lead and is creently second to Sleeping Dragon. Barbaloot, a Moore 24 is also halfway to Kaneohe while leading the doublehanded Division 2 fleet with Andrew Hamilton as Skipper with Sarah Deeds as crew. Alternate Reality has also crossed the halfway to Kaneohe mark.

Six Division A yachts are halfway to Hawaii including Division leader Shaman, a Cal 40 from Alameda skippered by Steve Waterloo. Gaviota, Azure, Calfornia Girl, Green Buffalo, No Ka Oi and Valis have crossed the halfway home mark.

Checkered Past continues as Division B leader, local entry Cirrus, skippered by Bill Myers is second in that division.

Sweet Okole leads Division C as it has also cleared the halfway to Kaneohe area followed by Bullet, an Express 32 out of San Francisco.

Sapphire is second to Sleeping Dragon in Division D.

Paul Cayard's Hula Girl continues to lead Division E while slipping back to 4th in the overall fleet.

With a day run of 264.1 miles, Pegasus50, skippered by Phillipe Kahn leads the downwind sleds in Division F. At the rate they are traveling, they should clear the halfway to the finish tomorrow afternoon.

With much of the fleet celebrating the halfway mark and more crossing it over the next few days we can count on a lot of mutual back patting as the halfway mark is a good badge of honor for hardworking sailors.

Today's Hawaii weather is rainy on the leeward side - it will get better by the time the fleet gets in.

The Pacific Cup: Started in 1980, the Pacific Cup race has attracted sailors of all stripes, from the hard-core ocean racer to the family ready and prepared for a true adventure. Roy Disney, Stan Honey, Philippe Kahn, and other luminaries in the sport have taken home Pacific Cup trophies, as have many family enterprises. The 2008 race will be one of the most heavily-attended in recent years, with 61 entries from 24 to 73 feet competing for a range of trophies including the Pacific Cup itself for best corrected time over the 2070-mile course.

Pacific Cup Yacht Club (PCYC) was established in 1979 to run the biennial Pacific Cup. PCYC's mission is to realize the dreams of 70 or more yachts full of sailors, in a competitive, safe, and fun race from San Francisco to Hawaii. As such, its pre-race seminars are not only qualifying events for Pacific Cup participation but a way to introduce and encourage participation in offshore sailing. About the Storm Trysail Club - The Storm Trysail Club (STC), reflecting in its name the sail which must be shortened when facing adverse conditions, is one of the world's most respected sailing clubs, with its membership comprised strictly of skilled blue water and ocean racing sailors. In addition to holding various prestigious offshore racing events (including the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race, Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex and Block Island Race), STC also hosts the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta and annual junior safety-at-sea seminars. It also has developed, in cooperation with the Transpacific Yacht Club, the Storm Trysail Transpac 65 and the Box Rule that will govern its design. Additional information is available at www.stormtrysail.org.
