KAILUA & KANEOHE ACTIVITIES Many of the activities listed here are also referenced & linked to the Kailua Chamber of Commerce website of http://www.kailuachamber.com/home.asp. Also check the Kailua Information Center located in the Kailua Shopping Center (600 Kailua Road, Suite 103, Post Office Box 1496, Kailua, HI 96734, Voice (808) 261-2727, Fax: (808) 262-0867, or Email: kcoc@kailuachamber.com) for brochures, maps, & tips to help you enjoy your stay. Paddle a Kayak out to Flat Island or to the Mokulua Islands (also known as the Mokes). Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks, 262-2555 (at the Beach Center across from the Kalapawai Market on Ku`ukama St) rent kayaks by the ½ day or full day. The "Mokes" are about 1 mile off of Lanikai beach and Flat Island is only ¼ mile off of Kailua Beach Park. Try Kite Surfing - The latest craze at the beach. Lessons are available from Robbie Naish's surf shop in Kailua or Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks, (262-2555, 130 Kailua Rd). Go Snorkeling along the Kailua or Lanikai beaches. You can rent snorkeling equipment form Aaron's Dive shop, Oahu Dive Center (both on Hahani St.) or Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks at the Kailua Beach Center on Ku`ukama St. across from the beach park. There is some good beginner snorkeling right off the beach opposite Moku Manu Street in Lanikai. Most days you often catch a glimpse of green sea turtles swimming in the area. Go Scuba Diving. Dive trips can be arranged with Oahu Dive Center (263-7333) or Aaron's Dive Shop (261-1211). Both provide great adventures and offer certification training through their PADI School. A current diving certificate is required for most dives. Go Bike Riding. Bikes can be rented from The Bike Shop (270 Kuulei Road, 261-1553) and Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks (130 Kailua Road, 262-2555) located in town. Kailua has an abundance of bike trails and lanes. Visit the Botanical Garden. Visit the Park or take a nature walk in the forest. Free-guided nature walks are available at 10AM on Saturdays and 1PM on Sundays at the Ho`omaluhia Botanical Garden in nearby Kaneohe. Entrance to the Park is FREE. Take a hike. Kailua is relatively level and besides the beaches we have several trails and walking paths around Kailua and Lanikai. The dike along the Kawai Nui Marsh is a great hike at the beginning of town off the Pali Highway. The 9-mile Maunawili trail that takes off from the hairpin turn on the Pali Highway is another. Breath-taking views can be seen from the top of the ridge over Lanikai or the top of Mount Olomana for the adventurers. Play a Round or 2 of Golf. There are several very fine golf courses in the area. The Pali golf course, located on Kamehameha Highway just north of Pali Highway, is the Municipal course (266-7610). Behind it is the Koolau course, although private, it is open to the public. Other golf courses include, Luana Hills (behind Mt. Olomana) and Olomana GC (on Kalanianiaole Highway in Waimanalo), Bay View (18-hole Executive course on Kaneohe Bay Drive 2 miles north of Kailua) and Klipper CG (available to military personal, military retirees, and DOD civilians) is located on Kaneohe Marine Base. MidPac Country Club in Lanikai is a private course and is not open to the public. Go Horseback riding. Just a short 15-minute drive from Kailua is the Correa Trails Hawaii Stables at Waimanalo (808-259-0014), our neighbor to the south on Kalanianaole Highway. Trails go up to the base of the Koolau's. There is also riding at the Kualoa Ranch (www.kualoa.com, 808-237-8515) on the other side of Kaneohe (across from Chinaman's Hat at Kualoa Beach Park) Visit Sea Life Park. Located in Waimanalo. The park is a great place to take the kids, young and old to see our ocean's marine life up close in the giant tank and watch the trained dolphins and seals perform with the a panoramic view of Waimanalo Bay and Rabbit Island as a back drop. There's a restaurant, gift shop and even a wedding chapel there for you to enjoy. (808-259-7933, 41-202 Kamehameha Hwy) Go - Enjoy the area, and tell your friends about this unique area of Hawaii! |
