Honolulu -- The halfway San Francisco-Kaneohe mark and millionth mile West Marine Pacific Cup reached, the 42 yacht crossing is in earnest as visions of Mai Tais and plumeria are dancing in the sailors' minds. Lightning has put 95 miles between her stern and the bow of Morpheus in the quest to be first to arrive at Kaneohe Bay.
The double handed fleet is still led by The Contessa under the guidance of Neil Weinberg and Shawn Throwe Plus Sixteen and Slim follow. Side bets are being made as to whether The Contessa or Lightning will be the first to Kaneohe Bay. The Contessa is 52.5 feet in length and carries a lot of sail. Lightening is 53 feet in length and a bit closer to Hawaii while putting in a few less daily miles. Stay tuned.
California Girl with their Millionth Mile trophy waiting at Kaneohe Yacht Club leads the competition in Division A as Green Buffalo has moved back into second place. Both are Cal 40s, vying for honors in that popular yacht. Hooligan is third. Cirrus, flying the burgee of Kaneohe yacht club is now seen in the division's fourth spot.
Division B is still in the hands of Tutto Bene, the Vetter family entry from Vallejo Yacht Club. Locomotion, out of Seattle is second and Irish lady, third.
ET, Basic Interest and Sweet Okole are the Division C leaders.
Recidivist still dominates Division D, followed by Orizaba, John Hanna's J130 from Portland. Third is The Rasmussen family's Sapphire which has remained in the hunt all through the race. Host, Kaneohe Yacht Club's 2 Guys On the Edge continues the struggle with broken boom and repaired spinnaker has dropped back to fifth.
The Division E chargers are led by Lightning, having put in the most productive day with 220.2 miles. Morpheus remains in second with Elyxer in third.
Communications boat, Cayenne reports being accompanied by a pod of spinner dolphins twice, yesterday. They were also followed by tuna who politely declined their invitation for lunch.
