WEST MARINE PACIFIC CUP STARTS 2040 MILE RACE, SAN FRANCISCO-KANEOHE BAY

San Francisco -- The 14th Biennial West Marine Pacific Cup got underway this morning with twentyone racing yachts passing under the Golden Gate Bridge to begin the long trek to Kaneohe Bay. The yachts ranged in size from 24 to 52 feet, crewed by as few as two sailors in the first of a four-day staggered start procedure.

There are 42 competitors in this year's race who will start each day through Thursday, July 6.

Today the double handed (two sailors aboard) yachts started at11:00am PDT as Canadian entry, Celerity, was the first yacht over the start line with Peter Cosman and Tom Guenther aboard. The Day's second start was at 11:15am with Division A yachts being led by Cayenne, a Passport 40 out of Belvedere Yacht Club, skippered by Michael Moradzadeh. The 11:30 starting group was led over the line by Edward Morgan's Express 34, Locomotion.

The sailors were greeted by foggy conditions and what was described by very light air.

The entire fleet is expected to reach Kaneohe Yacht Club beginning the week of July 17.
