SAN FRANCISCO, February 21, 2005 − The Pacific Cup Yacht Club (PCYC) today announced they will be conducting an Explore the Possibilities Seminar in preparation for the 2006 West Marine Pacific Cup. The seminar will be held during Strictly Sail® Pacific at Jack London Square, Oakland, CA on April 16 from 8:30AM to 12:30PM. The seminar will feature experts from the marine industry, naval architects, and experienced men and women sailors. They will address:
The seminar will provide hand-outs that deal with the ORC Category 1 Safety Prescriptions and suggested time lines for long lead-time items (selecting crew, sails, emergency steering systems). A list of inspection items required for the 2006 West Marine Pacific Cup will also be reviewed. Specifics of hull and rudder integrity; electrical, navigation and plumbing systems; communications; collision management; rig integrity and sail selection; and crew concerns will be discussed. There will be opportunities for questions and answers following each topic and at the end of the seminar. In addition, there will be a race-ready boat at the dock with ocean-passage gear for inspection. Also on April 16, the PCYC will host a ‘hospitality event’ from 4:30PM to 6:30PM, open to all past West Marine Pacific Cup racers and all who are interested in meeting and talking to those who have done the race. This will be a great time for informal questions and camaraderie. The 2006 West Marine Pacific Cup will mark the 100th anniversary of racing from California to Hawaii. The organizers of the first race originally planned a San Francisco start in 1906, but moved to Long Beach because of the earthquake that year. It became the Honolulu Transpac and is now held on odd-numbered years. The Pacific Cup revived racing from San Francisco to Hawaii in 1980, and now finishes at Kaneohe, Oahu, in even-numbered years. The start dates for the 2006 West Marine Pacific Cup race will be July 3 through July 7. # # # Media Contacts:
